Drift Bustin' and Cow Chasing!

It snowed about 6 inches from our best estimate. The wind has been blowing around 60 mph which is pretty intense for our first snow of the year.  So given the weather conditions I called my boss and told him I wasn't gonna chance leaving the house today.  I drive a little Pontiac sunfire - nickname: The Sun Perch.  Either way its not exactly built to bust drifts.  Its more like a pop can on wheels.   With white out conditions I was not about to make the 40 mile drive.

7 a.m. this morning....

I stayed home and baked cookies instead.  Then I fought with the thermostat.  This old farm house is drafty! It's not the coldest place I've lived in.  My college apartment was the coldest place - so cold that my houseplants froze in my room over Christmas break.  Oh those were the days...

Anyhow I went to the window to see if it was still snowing and I spied our landlord/neighbor at the end of our driveway.  On the road were two snow frosted bulls.  Dang it!

I grabbed my scarf and Carhartt coat and boots and ran outside.  We herded them around a good half hour before we got one of the bulls convinced to go into the corrals.  For luck a kid on a four wheeler buzzed by on his way home from checking his folk's cows.  He made getting that second bull in the corral short work.    However the cow was still out roaming the far pastures by the time the sunset.  The snow is still blowing about and drifting.

We called the landlord a little bit ago and he has her in a makeshift pen.    I am now drinking coffee and trying to defrost.  In my haste to help I was not dressed the warmest.  My bib overalls I think are at my parents still.  I was bounding in the drifts after the cattle in nothing but a pair of jeans.

But on a brighter note - the cows are all up in the corrals.  I noticed that some had red tags and others green.  With snowy faces the cows looked very festive - miserable but festive!   With the way the wind is blowing it doesn't look promising that I will go to the office tomorrow either.  Maybe I will get a photo of it.  Cheers*

  1. I work nights so I unfortunatly had to drive home from work this morning in the blowing snow. I stayed an extra hour unitl daylight but luckily I took our truck and drove it in 4 wheel drive all the way home busting through drifts :) You'll have to share with us some of your favorite recipes.

  2. Stay safe and warm! The only and I mean ONLY think I like about snowstorms is when everyone is safe inside and get to spend time together doing fun things like baking cookies! Sometimes I feel like it's God's way of reminding us to slow down and enjoy the moments with our families, since we live in a day and age that spending time with loved ones sitting around at home isn't very common.
