We are no stranger to snow, wind and rain. This week we experienced a wet long lasting snow storm. Thrusday started with a blood red sky. Everyone kept an eye on the weather. At 11:30 I saw my first flurry. I bid my co-workers good day. I live the furtherest away and didn't want to get caught in the storm. I know I have 4 wheel drive now, but that doesn't do any good in white out conditions. I got home before the hard stuff hit.
As soon as I got home I checked the heifers and calves. I did take my camera and had it tucked in my carhartt coat. There was a new calf in the barn and I was praying there would not be anymore calves that day. So I walked out in the pasture to check to see if any of the others were close...
I call this photo: Brace Yourself...
Can you see the calf? Never fear - mom was near by and soon had baby nestled down in the straw that was rolled out for them to bed in.
Snow bulls!!!
Later Wade finally made it home. Him and the boss man went out and decided it would be best to bring the heifers and calves down out of the pasture to the corrals. There was some straw rolled out and some shelter from the terrible wind. Well how to do you gather 50 or so heifers in six inch snow? A horse of course....
After he got them in the corrals he made a sweep of the pasture and found one little calf. It's mama must of hidden him away from the snow. Never fear - they were re-united.
Sorry this photo is so blurry - but the snow was heavy and I was on the porch out of the way. You can see the little calf's ear tag.
Well it snowed the rest of the night. We got about 10-12 inches. No calves were born and we didn't loose any. Success! I hope you and yours made it through the storm ok and you have a great weekend!

BRRRR! Glad everyone made it in ok. A horse is the only way to go. :)
ReplyDeleteHope the weather is nicer and you guys enjoyed a big cup of hot chocolate after that!
ReplyDeleteGlad you didn't end up having any babies in the snow, and I'm glad he found that little guy before it was too late! Bad news is it's supposed to storm again tonight/tomorrow now - hope you guys hang in there again!
